Who We Are
Hello! My name is Daria, and I’m one half of the duo that runs the Mariposa Marketplace. My husband, Scott, is the other half.
Like many of life’s adventures, becoming the owners of the Marketplace was completely unplanned! We fell in love with Mariposa during our first visit right after Scott retired. While chatting with the sales clerk, we discovered the Marketplace was closing because the owners were retiring. It sparked an idea—this could be something fun to do in our retirement. And just like that, here we are! We took over the shop in September 2019, just before the pandemic. Thanks to our wonderful landlords, terrific vendors, and fabulous customers, we’ve managed to grow and flourish.
Owning the Marketplace is a joy! We meet amazing people from all over the world daily, thanks to our proximity to Yosemite National Park. We are fortunate to have year-round visitors and feel blessed and inspired by their travel adventures and stories from back home. Additionally, our incredible local customers make a point of supporting us and our small business—we couldn’t do it without them!
And then there are our vendors. Our vendors are like family to us. They curate and stock their areas with wonderful, ever-changing items that captivate our customers with their variety and quality, all while maintaining fair and competitive prices.
We hope you’ll stop by to visit, enjoy our historic building, and have fun shopping. Whether it’s to chat about the park and your travel adventures or finding the perfect gift and souvenir, there truly is something for everyone at the Mariposa Marketplace!
Trabucco History
Built in 1896, the Trabucco Building was originally known as the “Cheap Cash Store.” The materials of the building are rich with history. Its walls are constructed from foot-thick Mormon Bar granite. The windows, also from Mormon Bar, were salvaged from a Chinese store, adding a unique touch of history. A wrought iron staircase, shipped around Cape Horn, delivered to San Francisco, and then transported by wagon to the Marketplace, serves as a striking feature of the building. Local stone masons meticulously crafted the interior stone wall using rocks from Mariposa.
Today, the Trabucco Building remains largely original, with the first-floor windows, doors, and light fixtures being the only modern updates. The upstairs windows are still the original ones, as are the green steel shutters at the front of the building, which protect the store from fire and, historically, from the bullets of gold miners. You can even spot a few bullet dents on the front iron shutter.
